Love this engraving of Swiss (Basel) dress from the 1630s entitled "How To Admire One Another in a Good Year." Still trying to work what the young woman has concealed under her headdress — that hoof sticking out beneath the veil is a bit alarming. What we won't do for fashion. But it does show both the wealth in their clothing and the prosperity of their comestibles!

Looks like she has a leg of lamb, and bottles of sine or maybe oil. He has got the bread and wine. Dinner coming up.
It is a lovely image of abundance! And I can appreciate the time honored tradition of women carrying heavy burdens on their heads — I just thought it was a bit amusing to see that hoofed leg sticking out beneath the cloth. It must have been an awkward thing to balance!
curiouser & curiouser!
