Consider Alabama Chanin a sort of American answer to William Morris’ Arts and Craft movement, mixed with the surge of Green Eco-friendly attention to fabrics and clothing. It is hard to know which excites me more — as a consumer oh so lusting after their exquisite one of a kind clothing, all hand-stitched and richly embroidered, or as a fabric artist, fascinated by the return of such lavish needle work techniques to enrich the fabrics.
Here find reverse application, bead work, ribbon embroidery, application, netting, hundreds of tiny tucks, over-stitched seams, raveling hems, seed stitch, and french knots. If you’re a fashionista, go and visually gorge yourself on their amazing collections (and yes…the outrageous prices! But worth it considering one is buying not just a dress but a stunning work of needlework art).
And if you are a textile artist, have a look at their fabrics, their techniques, and their workshops. Since my pocketbook can’t accommodate the wonderful clothing, my fingers are itching to try some of the embroidery work on clothes I already own. Even their t-shirts are gorgeous.
